CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Futaba Sakura
AGE: 15
CANON: Persona 5
CANON HISTORY: game plot • her wiki page
CANON PERSONALITY:
Futaba is the true support member of the Phantom Thieves, the all seeing Oracle who watches over them.
She is their relay of information, giving and taking all within the safe confines of her spaceship persona. It’s a mirror image of her reality with her first meetings making it seem she’s your typical case of a hikkikomori. She’s withdrawn from society at large, locking herself into her room with no sign of coming out anytime soon. Interaction only comes from online where faces don’t face to meet and the (metaphorical) pen is mightier than spoken word. In the safe confines of her room, she is in control at all times and there is no chance hurting her here.
Digging deeper into that, Futaba's behavior is all due to being a victim of adult manipulation and her state of being is a direct result of it. The true cause behind her mother's death lead her relatives into believing not only had it been a suicide, Futaba had been the cause of it. Her family as a result turns against her, leading to abuse from all angles. During Futaba’s stay with him, her own Uncle treated her no better than a stray dog until a family friend finally stepped in and took her away. Unlike her blood relatives, Sojiro adopts her, trusts her, and lets her be as she hides and tries, and fails to cope with it all.
By the time the others meet Futaba, the imprint of her abusers voices have left their mark. Between her own hazy memories of the accident and what came after, Futaba truly believes their words and the world is a better place without her. Yet a part of her hold onto the knowledge there’s something not right about all of this. There are things don’t add up and she can’t move on until she knows the truth. Thus when the opportunity arises, it leads her to reach out and ask for help, for a fighting chance against the distortion in her mind.
Her own palace is a tomb, a place meant to house her body into the afterlife. Yet her shadow- Futaba's true feelings; ends up being more helpful than hindering the Thieves throughout. However it’s only thanks to Futaba finding the strength to stand on her own that they beat back the shadow; a cognitive creation of her mother, created by those who belittled her and her own desire to see Wakaba again. She condemns those who had done this to her and with so, finds the power within to do something about it.
Of course just changing your own cognition doesn’t happen overnight. She’s been hiding for so long, meeting up face to face with all these strangers is Too Much. She might be able to handle being physically present but only under a mask where she can’t be seen and they can’t see her. Given the chance, she’d rather flee the battle than interact with what is needed. But luckily the others are there to help her through, to be there as she slowly gains the confidence to exist in the open again.
Even with all their work, Futaba herself is still an oddity. She does what she wants, when she wants and not always within the guidelines of “normal” behavior. There is no conforming to the rules of society and even though it alienates her, she sticks to her ways. The phantom thieves are no different than the rest; it’s hard to find common ground with her at first. But they let her be her and in doing so she finds a group that doesn’t mind her behavior, quirks and all. Of course this doesn't mean personalities don't clash and occasionally her casual way of doing things rubs some of them the wrong way. Yusuke gets it the most being the straight man to her sense of humor.
Yet the only person who she truly drops her guard around is our Protag. He is the one who encourages her from the start and thus she finds safety with him through the course of the game. Despite all else, she knows that Akira will protect her from harm and cheer her on when she falters. The biggest example being when Sojiro finds the calling card they give her, Futaba shuts down. All of their work aside anxiety plays by no ones rules and in the beginning stages of a full blown attack, it's Akira who steps forward and assumes all responsibility. Despite game options, it’s thanks to that sibling-esque bond that Futaba truly blossoms and pushes herself back into a functional place. Her truest personality shines through in their little moments, that cheer that never broke under her experiences.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Futaba’s number one ability circles around her computer obsession. She’s a skilled hacker, having founded the name of the anonymous hacker Medjed. Even after absconding her role in their work, digging into their code is a walk in the park for her to manipulate. She’s shown to have bugged multiple people, change data on websites, remotely take over tv stations, and retaliate against any measures taken against it by bouncing it through countless relays IT just can’t keep up with. Along with that, Futaba also is able to build apps from the ground up and install it without the target being aware of it. This girl is a internet menace. Luckily shemostly uses her powers for good.
It’s no surprise that her Persona would originally take on the form Necronomicon, a UFO (complete with it’s own tentacles). At rank 10 of her confidant link it mega-evolves into Prometheus, a not much better floating smiley face (?). Her persona’s abilities include Analysis, Subrecover HP and Subrecover SP. With her confidant ranks, she also gains Moral Support (apply healing / buff skills to the party), Mementos Scan (mapping a floor), Position Hack (changing cognition straight to a Hold Up), Active Support (moral support rank 2), Treasure Reboot (revives searchable objects), Emergency Shift (switches backup and party members upon multi KO’s) and Final Guard (nullifies a fatal attack).
She also has a habit of hitting critical failures after running on 100 for too long of a time. In doing so she she’s completely out cold like a coma patient until her 'batteries recharge'.

AU HISTORY:
AU PERSONALITY:
The biggest change here is her mother is still alive. It changes everything.
At her core, Futaba is still Futaba. She’s still far smarter than half the room, she does things to her own tempo and given the chance, she’ll kick your ass in Mario Kart.
However, with her mom present in her life things go… better. Not perfectly, of course, no life goes that way. But Futaba has someone in her corner, someone to go to when things get rough and who loves her above all else. She’s encouraged to explore, to be and isn’t tossed in a corner and demanded that she not exist. She’s mentally stronger than her counterpart and able to face life’s difficulties with mom by her side. It makes her more open, more able to reach out and not expect to be burned in response.
Yet school still makes it difficult. She’s still a strange one and kids her age don’t appreciate that. Gaming and forums are still a safer place to her, the ability to filter out hate giving her the power over bullies she can’t escape normally. But the friendships she makes through them translate more easily than it ever did before, the sheer terror that kept her bound to her room not even a problem to focus on.
She’s a brighter, stronger 2.0 model, far closer to the peace she’s achieved by the end of the game than where she starts.
- Futaba was the direct result of a surprise encounter at business convention. An explosion of science and technology if you will :’)
- Her mother ultimately decided to keep her and out of politeness, notified her father after the birth. He did not mind spawning a child but ultimately had no desire raising one.
- Which was fine, mom managed her all on her own with minimal support while also working full-time.
- It was a bit of a lonely childhood with mom's research not leaving a lot of time for play. But she knew she was loved and that's what matters.
- Because of this, Futaba grew up with plenty of time to go through and absorb her mom's textbooks as a kid. It leaves her far ahead of her classmates much to their great displeasure. It’s just so much more interesting than playing house for the fiftieth time though.
- Just like canon, Futaba spent most of her time bullied by her classmates. Her grades are nigh perfect and no one but her mom and the teachers are pleased by this
- Her One Canon Friend as a child lasts until middle school where she ends up moving away due to circumstances.
- Gaming soothes the loneliness only so much. And honestly playing single-player on an mmo is just Sad.
- Which leads her to the rest of the internet where things are just as nasty but her defense stats are way higher. It's amazing, the power of the block button.
- Eventually it leads her to coding (which is fun), programming (which is entertaining) and eventually into hacking (which is eye opening)
- Though she originally ends up hacking for peeking into school records (partially for blackmail, partially to keep an eye on her own scores), it eventually snowballs into fiddling with things. If she can not have to share a classroom with certain people, the world would be a much better place.
- Unsurprisingly, it doesn't help. Her new classmates are just as bad.
- Mom being as deep into her research as she is, is not a fool and knows exactly what her whip smart child has been up to. And thus, gives her an option. Remain in her current school or finish her education elsewhere. Thanks to her work, moving is not a problem and if relocating will help then they'll relocate.
- Which is how they end up in Recolle.
- And surprisingly, it helps. She's still a weird one who's too smart for her own good, but it's a much more relaxed atmosphere about it. She's got friends now!! People who don't mind her quirks!! Wild!!
- She’s ends up with her hands in multiple gaming pies both online and off. It’s become a good source of entertainment and a good way for her to meet more people in the city with the same interest as her.

ADDENDUM
Date: 2017-06-27 08:45 pm (UTC)Understandably, it’s where her true enthusiasm lays. Get her onto the subject and prepare to get your ears chatted off about it for as long as she has your attention. The newest games? She’s beaten it, get the ultra rare trophy let her tell you about that battle. Featherman R’s latest episode? Did you see what they did, she can’t believe they did that!! This, however, this only applies to topics she’s invested. Start drifting too close to other subjects she’d rather not think about and she’s quieter than a clammed up shell.
The thieves dealt with this when first trying to get to know her. Makoto strong-arms the group into getting them and her assimilated to each other and it’s only through the above topics that they really warm up to each other. By the time the group has their last battle, Futaba trusts them unabashedly. She’s open with them, able to show her true feelings. (Though perhaps a bit antagonistic with Yusuke because most of her behavior goes straight over his head… but) It’s through the (mostly) gentle ribbing and teasing that Futaba shows her cards. Sure they still think she’s a little odd if the mementos dialog is anything to go by, but as a whole, they roll with it (occasionally encourage it (yusuke))) and she loves them for it.
They are who makes Futaba brave and willing to face down the darkness. They might be the ones with the abilities to deal with whatever comes at them but she is the only one with the ability to guide them through the darkness (Mona’s car eyes notwithstanding). If she panics, they die. It’s as simple as that. These are the people who reached out to her, pulling her out of the dark. It’s all she can do to make sure that it doesn’t drag them under as repayment.
Of course, it gets easier as time passes and she maxes out her stat points, but by the end, she won’t run anymore. She’s seen what if does and with them, she’s seen what standing firm will do. She joined the team to learn the Truth. And now? Futaba will hold onto what she’s learned and continue to choose to break free of those chains that held her. The darkness in her heart has no hold on her any longer.
AU CHANGES [Aug 2018]
Date: 2018-08-29 04:04 am (UTC)- She was the result of the former couple rekindling a torrent love affair after a divorce and a remarriage. It's literally a rom-com in story and the tale changes upon each retelling.
- Her childhood goes better than expected with having both parents and sibling(s) around to combat the would-be loneliness
- they know about Elliot and Futaba keeps in regular contact with her half brother. OHANA MEANS NO ONE GETS LEFT BEHIND etc
- sometime during her childhood, dad dies in an accident
- mom raises the two of them on her lonesome afterward. it’s not easy since her job keeps her away 90% of the time so it’s just the two of them more than not. After all,
sciencepsience waits for no one.- Matt most likely has a hand in long term babysitting until they were old enough to stay alone by themselves? Weekends with Uncle Matt?
- Bad Uncle? We don’t know him. With Wakaba distant but alive, Uncle Shitheel remains estranged from his sister.
